Prediction is Chance, and Chance is Probability: Insights from Data Science and the Quran

As a Data Science student, I often find parallels between the principles we study and the profound wisdom found in the Quran. One verse that particularly stands out is verse 25 of Surah Fatir (The Originator). This verse, in essence, can be seen as an early reference to what we now term as 'Predictive Analytics'. Let's explore this in more detail.

Predictive Analytics in the Divine Context

In verse 25 of Surah Fatir, Allah Almighty informs the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that rejection from the people is not a new phenomenon. It has happened to previous messengers as well:

> "If they reject you, (it is not something new, because) those before them have (also) rejected (messengers). Their messengers came to them with clear proofs and with scriptures and with the enlightening book." [35:25]

Here, Allah is essentially predicting the behavior of the people based on historical data. Just as in predictive analytics, where future outcomes are forecasted based on past data trends, Allah’s estimation is based on the patterns observed in the past. This comparison beautifully highlights that Allah’s knowledge and predictions are beyond any human capability—His understanding is absolute and His predictions are always accurate.

The Role of Probability and Chance

Another relevant verse comes from Surah Ta-Ha:

> "So speak to him in soft words. Maybe, he accepts the advice or fears (Allah)." [20:44]

This verse highlights the concept of probability and chance. Even with divine knowledge, the verse suggests that there is a chance that Pharaoh might heed the warning when approached with kindness. In data science, we often deal with probabilities and uncertainties, trying to estimate the likelihood of different outcomes. This verse teaches us that while we can predict probabilities, the ultimate outcome lies in the hands of Allah.

Data Collection and Observational Insights

In the same Surah, Allah reassures Musa and Harun:

> "He said, 'Do not be afraid. I AM surely with you both. I hear and I see.'" [20:46]

Here, the process of data collection is emphasized—Allah is aware of all observations. For data scientists, collecting accurate and comprehensive data is crucial. This verse reminds us that while we collect and analyze data, the ultimate collection and understanding of all data lie with Allah.

The Perfect Estimator and Mathematician

The Quran also speaks about Allah's precision in estimation:

> "Thus We did (all this with perfect) measures; so We are the best to measure." [77:23]

> "And who determined a measure (for everything), then guided (it)." [87:03]

These verses can be seen as an acknowledgment of Allah as the ultimate mathematician and statistician. His measures and estimations are perfect, far surpassing human capabilities. As data scientists, we strive for accuracy in our models and estimations, but these verses remind us of the ultimate perfection in Allah’s calculations.

The Limitations of Human Knowledge

Lastly, verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah highlights the limits of human knowledge:

> "...He knows what is before them and what is behind them; while they encompass nothing of His knowledge, except what He wills..." [2:255]

This verse serves as a humbling reminder of the limitations of human understanding. No matter how advanced our data science models become, they can never encompass the totality of Allah’s knowledge. Our capabilities are finite and only a fraction of the divine wisdom.

Conclusion

Reflecting on these verses, it's awe-inspiring to see the intersections between divine wisdom and the principles of data science. As we delve into predictive analytics, probability, data collection, and precise measurements, we are reminded of the ultimate knowledge and perfection that belong solely to Allah. Subhan Allah! The Quran not only provides spiritual guidance but also insights that resonate deeply with various fields of modern science, including data science. This realization enriches our understanding and appreciation of both our faith and our field of study.
