Why we should not follow Satan?
Introduction
Satan (Shaytan) is the sworn enemy of humanity. Allah warns us repeatedly in the Quran to avoid his deception and not to follow his footsteps. Understanding why we should not follow Satan, why he does not teach good despite knowing it, and his self-destructive nature can provide deep insights into our faith and purpose in life.
1. Why We Should Not Follow Satan?
Allah commands us not to follow Satan because he is an open enemy to mankind. He seeks to misguide people, leading them away from the path of righteousness and into sin.
Quranic References:
-
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:168-169): "O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allah what you do not know."
-
Surah Al-A’raf (7:16-17): "[Iblis] said: 'Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful.'"
Satan’s ultimate goal is to divert humans from worshiping Allah and to lead them towards destruction. Following Satan leads to spiritual blindness, moral decay, and eventual punishment in the Hereafter.
2. Why Does Satan Not Teach Good When He Knows It?
Satan was once among the most pious beings, worshiping Allah alongside the angels. However, his arrogance led to his downfall. Even though he knows the truth, his pride and jealousy prevent him from doing good.
Quranic References:
-
Surah Sad (38:75-76): "[Allah] said, ‘O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?’ He said, ‘I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.'"
-
Surah Al-Hijr (15:39-40): "[Iblis] said, ‘My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all. Except among them Your chosen servants.’"
Satan does not teach good because his purpose is to lead humans astray. His arrogance and hatred towards mankind prevent him from guiding anyone towards righteousness.
3. Why Does Satan Eat His Excessive Waste? When He Can Eat Halal Food After Reciting Bismillah
Satan is created from fire and does not require physical sustenance as humans do. However, he feeds off impurity, filth, and haram substances, reinforcing his evil nature.
Hadith References:
-
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "When one of you eats, he should mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, he should say: ‘In the name of Allah at its beginning and at its end.’" (Abu Dawood 3767, Tirmidhi 1858)
-
Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (RA) reported: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'When a person enters his house and mentions the name of Allah at the time of entering and eating, Satan says [to his followers], ‘There is no place to stay for you and no dinner.’ But when he enters without mentioning the name of Allah, Satan says, ‘You have a place to stay.’ And if he does not mention Allah’s name before eating, Satan says, ‘You have a place to stay and dinner.'" (Sahih Muslim 2018)
From these narrations, we learn that Satan cannot consume food over which the name of Allah has been mentioned. His sustenance is derived from impure and filthy things, including waste. Unlike humans who are given the ability to consume lawful food, Satan is inherently impure and cannot partake in what is blessed.
Conclusion
Following Satan leads to destruction, as he is a deceiver and enemy of mankind. Despite knowing the truth, he chooses to mislead humanity out of arrogance and envy. His nature is corrupt, and he thrives on impurity. To protect ourselves from his evil, we must seek refuge in Allah, remain steadfast in prayer, and adhere to the teachings of the Quran and Hadith.
Surah An-Nahl (16:98): "So when you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan."
May Allah protect us all from Satan’s deception and guide us on the straight path. Ameen.
