Allah Almighty is Al Ahad and As-Samad

The Qur’an introduces us to the beautiful and powerful attributes of Allah Almighty, each of which holds deep wisdom, guidance, and reflection for our lives. Among the most profound of these attributes are Al Ahad (The One and Only) and As-Samad (The Eternal Refuge). Both appear in Surah Al-Ikhlas—a chapter so concise yet so complete that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described it as equivalent to one-third of the Qur’an (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Al Ahad — The One and Only

“Say: He is Allah, the One.” (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1)

The name Al Ahad emphasizes Allah’s absolute Oneness and uniqueness. Unlike anything in creation, Allah has no partner, no rival, no equal. While the human mind often compares and categorizes, Allah is beyond all forms of similarity. He is not just “one” in number, but One in essence, One in power, One in perfection.

This attribute teaches us the foundation of Tawheed (belief in the Oneness of Allah). It reminds us that all acts of worship—prayer, supplication, sacrifice, and gratitude—are directed only to Him. When a believer understands Al Ahad, they realize that true peace lies in freeing themselves from dependency on worldly powers and relying solely on Allah.

As-Samad — The Eternal Refuge

“Allah, the Eternal Refuge.” (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:2)

The name As-Samad means the One upon whom all creation depends, while He depends on none. Every living being turns to Allah for provision, guidance, forgiveness, and protection. He is the ultimate source of strength when we are weak, of shelter when we feel lost, and of sustenance when we are in need.

Being As-Samad, Allah is perfect, self-sufficient, and free from all wants. Unlike His creation, He never tires, never needs rest, food, or sleep. For believers, this attribute instills comfort: no matter how heavy our burdens, Allah is always there to turn to, the One who never fails.

Practical Reflections for Our Lives

  1. Strengthen Tawheed: By understanding Al Ahad, we purify our worship from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and strengthen our direct connection to Him.

  2. Seek Refuge in Allah: As As-Samad, Allah invites us to call upon Him in every need, no matter how small or great.

  3. Detach from Dependence on Creation: People, wealth, or status may fail us—but Allah never does.

  4. Find Peace in Difficulties: Remembering that Allah is self-sufficient and capable of all things allows us to face life’s challenges with hope and patience.

Conclusion

The names Al Ahad and As-Samad together summarize the essence of Islamic faith: Allah is uniquely One and the Eternal Refuge. When we embrace these attributes in our hearts, we find clarity in worship, resilience in hardships, and ultimate peace in knowing that we are never alone.

In a world filled with uncertainty, these two divine attributes remind us that there is only One worthy of our absolute trust—Allah, the One and Only, the Eternal Refuge.
